SPACES IN COMPOSITION

Spaces in Composition

Spaces in Composition is one of the earliest video artworks by Lola Lustosa. The piece emerges from an ongoing exploration of visual composition, investigating the layered dimensions of image, space, and perception.

Through the camera and the editing process, the work searches for relationships between movement, rhythm, and spatial depth. The composition unfolds through overlapping visual planes, creating a dialogue between structure and abstraction. In this process, the image becomes a field where different layers of space interact and transform.

The sound environment draws inspiration from the experimental music of John Cage, whose work explores rhythm, chance, and the musical potential of everyday actions.

“La luce inarrivabile” della nostra esistenza è il senso del video. della canzone in se.
Il video è un modo di esprimere tutto ciò in una forma astratta, attraverso anche lo studio della luce ed il suo comportamento in contrasto al darkstep di Chantal.

LITTLE STORM

The music video “Little Storm” made for ZÄIL is a tribute to life and nature. The video comes in the format of an intuitive story about The Myths of Adam & Eve getting alive in psychological danger. Paradise is no longer safe. The music expresses a protest of a human, that wishes to be heard, that wants to stop the unnatural progress of society, but no longer is listened and come ‘s out as a deep r lyrics and beats.

Adam & Eve feels the dangerous of there classical renaissance image while being together with the thoughts of mass control of the system, injustice, war, religious rape and factual pain.

The woman and the man are the same Mother Nature. They represent a contemporary dialogue of mind between dark and light, thoughts and reality, hope and fear. Let’s face the facts we must look back to nature.

BETWEEN

The video dance performance explores the idea of being between points, without a defined beginning or end. The piece values the creative process and focuses on the experience of living an idea before it takes formal shape—remaining open to many directions, yet with a single visible path represented by the stairs.

The stairs, a surrealist symbol, represent the inner world of the individual, capable of bringing together different phases without distinction of chronological time. The human body becomes the vehicle for these mental ellipses, navigating the attempts and experiments that unfold throughout this process.

SKIN TO SKIN (Péle a Péle)

SKIN TO SKIN (Péle a Péle)

Inspired by the film Lygia: From Skin to Skin by Helena Lustosa and by the ideas of Lygia Clark—particularly her concept of shedding or losing the skin as a process of transformation—the performance and installation Skin to Skin, by Lola Lustosa and Mari Stockler, transforms and transcends the human body into sculpture. The work originates in the body and evolves into a new body, both complete in their existence. Like a snake or a scorpion shedding its skin, it leaves behind an image in order to open itself to new possibilities.

Performance / Installation: Lola Lustosa and Mari Stockler
Video editing: Lola Lustosa
Camera: Mari Stockler and Carlito Carvalhosa
Music: Arto Lindsay

Duration: approx. 30 minutes

Venue: Center of Art Hélio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro

CAPITAVEIS “YOU CAUGHT”

CAPITAVEIS “YOU CAUGHT”

Light has a meaning that goes beyond color, beyond incidence or reflection itself. As I see it, light is the greatest evidence of the passage of time. In this work, I explore the search to connect two universes—the micro, my starting point, and the macro, whose limits I cannot know. These are abstractions of the mind, simple questions, pure points of interrogation, and the absence of answers.

ESTUDANTINA

Posted by

Estudantina is a sequence of moments derived from a short performance. It presents six seconds across six photographs. As in both photography and dance, the work focuses on capturing and defining a precise moment. Exposure time is what renders everything visible. The gesture within the sequence is one of disappearing into light while simultaneously being revealed through exposure. Lustosa works as a dancer, performer, and photographer, and her practice often combines these three elements.

Medium: Photomontage
Dimensions: 240 × 300 cm; each photograph 120 × 100 cm

The Roof on My Head

The Roof on My Head is a video dance directed by Lola Lustosa. The work is a dialogue between improvisation, time, space, and concept. “To give time to time” is the headline of this work. The piece questions the fast tempo of our movements in society, refusing domination by any force on the geographical, cultural, or ideological compass.

AFTERMATH

Posted by

Metronome

The metronome clicks and gives the pulse to the square-format stage. The lights are on. Four dancers are given rules to move according to the cycle of light. When the lights go off, the dancers move. When the lights come on again, they stop.

The sound of their movements is recorded through contact microphones attached to the floor. With delay, these sounds create different rhythms, all still guided by the continuous rhythm of the metronome.

Because we do not see the dancers’ movements, we begin to imagine them, as we only see their expressions during the still moments. What remains for us is to create our own understanding and contribute, through imagination, to their efforts and actions.

My Research Goals

My goal is to develop my project AFTERMATH, a contemporary dance work that I also consider a method. Aftermathwas first presented in 2012 as a work in progress at the Plataforma Berlin Festival, where I represented Brazil. The work had a duration of 10 minutes, but I would now like, together with my group, to further develop and investigate the project in order to reach a final format.

Aftermath as a Method

Having simple rules or regulations creates a certain frame and space for play, while a variety of topics and themes brings many possibilities for reflection and experimentation. Within the Aftermath method, however, the research must be played through to the end before the results can be analyzed.

When we go back in our minds to understand something in the present, it is often referred to as an aftermath — recalculations of something that has already taken place. History also changes every day, and so does our relationship to it.

Aftermath investigates time and tempo in order to create moments where something is hidden or silenced, so that we only see one “half,” while the other “half” we hear. Our connotations and assumptions create the story, and Aftermathultimately reflects on how our own perceptions shape the way we understand what we experience.

Our technical elements — sound, tempo and rhythm, together with light and darkness, also controlled through rhythm — create a metaphorical platform for producing a wide variety of re-enactments of life through contemporary dance.

The beginning of the project focused on exploring the technical possibilities: recording the floor and its sounds through contact microphones, and also recording the sounds of the lights switching on and off. We created different scores to generate group choreographies, with sound and light reacting in time.

I would like to expand this process and its challenges and develop it further as a narrative — a sequence of scenes carried through using these technical elements and the Aftermath method. The group already understands the method and its metaphorical possibilities, and new scenes and choreographies can be developed through research and improvisation.

FACTORY

Posted by

Four dancers are brought into an old factory and given tools and themes with which to improvise. The video is the result of these playful exercises and social interactions, expressed through contemporary dance. The idea of play and improvisation functions as a tool to reveal the honest collective emotions that emerge within the atmosphere of the former factory space.
